HANDSHAPE PROJECT > PHASE 1

CONNECTING STRANGERS

A Concept for the City of Berlin by Meike Ziegler

Nov 9, 2019 marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. To commemorate this pivotal event in world history, the Berlin Handshape Project was realized in collaboration with visitBerlin and the Berlin Wall Foundation.

There are moments in life when we reach out our hand without wondering whether the person we approach is a friend or a stranger. That is because we are all humans and fundamentally the same. Handshape was born from this, from a longing to build bridges, not walls. It is a symbol of our collective aspiration for a better world, the world we want to live in.

Handshape, is about coming together, opening ourselves to another human being- regardless of his or her background. At its core this project is about bringing 'human connection' to the forefront.
Throughout the summer and autumn of 2019 our international team of 30 Handshape connectors invited people from all walks of life and every corner of the city to participate in our social art project for Berlin. Meeting up at our clay-laden trolleys, pairs of strangers broke the ice and took the plunge into an open-hearted exchange.

Almost 22.000 strangers were invited to talk, share stories, find common ground and form human connections. To create a lasting manifestation of these ephemeral encounters, 10.957 unique Handshapes were shaped from balls of soft clay as two hands met in a firm and friendly handshake – one for each day that had passed since the fall of the Wall. Together they formed a symbol of togetherness, the Monument to Human Connection.

The individual Handshapes were all suspended together in space, forming a poetic reminder of our shared humanity. These fluid formations were created on location at the Berlin Wall Memorial, one inside and one in an open-air pavilion.
