As our world becomes more connected and diverse, our societies can feel increasingly divided. We build walls - physical, political and personal - that separate us from one another.
What if, instead of simply tearing walls down, we transformed them into tables?
Berlin Wall Table is a participatory art installation and ritual created by artist Meike Ziegler.
On 9 November 2025, marking the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, two sections of the historic Wall were tilted by massive cranes to slowly fall into a 7-metre table, transforming symbols of separation into a place for connection. The ritual took place at the Wall Memorial Lapidarium in Berlin, where the installation remained for 17 months.
The table became a meeting place for many visitors from around the world and the starting point for 12 Open Table Talks - gatherings bringing people from different backgrounds and perspectives together around this table.
Groups of 12– max 25 participants explored themes that shape how we live together. Each group chose the theme for the next conversation. What began with FREEDOM evolved into TRUTH, BELIEF, CHAOS, BALANCE, INFINITY, OVERTHINKING and others.
Moderated by the artist and filmed by a small production team, the conversations explore how we can listen, disagree, question our assumptions and remain connected across differences.
The aim is simple: to create a space where people can speak openly, listen to one another and experience that peaceful coexistence with strangers is possible … even when we disagree.
